Meet Elder and Interim Pastor Dr. Peter Hasbrouck
In his own words:
My wife, Caryn, and I have been members of First Baptist Church since 1999 when we returned from ministry in Ecuador. I was born and raised in NH and was saved through the Sunday School ministry of my church. From my Junior High years, I sensed God’s calling to ministry, and so I attended Moody Bible Institute to study missions and Christian education.
Caryn (from Wisconsin) and I met at Moody and were married in 1985. God led us to minister in Ecuador with Avant Ministries where we served in Theological Education in the cities of Latacunga and Quito.
When we sensed it was time for us to leave Ecuador God, brought us to New England Bible College in 1999. I served as a full-time professor and became the Academic Dean in 2005. Caryn served briefly at NEBC, then began to teach Spanish at the Greater Portland Christian School.
The closure of the college in 2014 brought another change in direction. God has allowed me the privilege of completing a Ph.D. in Religion from Boston University and continuing to minister to young adults through a home Bible study called the Rabble.
God has also been leading me away from academia, toward pastoral ministry. From October 2015 until July 2016 I was privileged to serve as part-time interim pastor at Bible Baptist Church in Saco.
Now I’m honored to serve our church family as Interim Pastor. Send me an email so we can arrange to have coffee together. I’d love to hear how God is leading you. Jesus is building His church, and we’d love to have you join us as we seek to follow Him together here in South Portland, Maine.

Pastor Phil (recently retired)
Pastor Phil (2002-2018) was an ordained minister and the Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of South Portland, Maine. He is a graduate of New England Baptist Bible College ~ South Portland, Maine ~ (class of 1989) and graduates May 2014 from Bethel Seminary of the East. He had to take an extended leave of absence from seminary due to his wife having a life-changing accident in 1995, but things settled enough for him to return to seminary in 2004.
For seven years, Pastor Phil served as a full-time pastor and for nine years as an interim pastor throughout the Mid-Coast of Maine; helping churches that were in need of healing or just guidance from a gentle shepherd. During his time as an interim pastor, he worked in secular jobs, experiencing the day to day world in which his flocks worked and lived.
Pastor Phil enjoys fishing, target shooting, motorcycling, but his passion is making disciples. As a former Marine, his motto is “Honor, courage and commitment are ‘corps’ values that build character.” He has been married to Sally (McElroy) for over thirty-eight years. They reside in South Portland, Maine. They have two children and three grandchildren.
